As-Salamu 3alaykum ...
Last week I enrolled in a course called ABA: Applied Behavioural Analysis.
Though at first I couldnt make much expectations other than: Well I will eventually learn how to deal with kids when they cry, pull their hair, hit their heads or refuse to participate in the physio setting.
The course started with discussing the normal development of child psychology, how and when he learns to ask or demand something that he needs, express himself (joy, pain, hunger, toilet, boredom ...) and when does he start to develop imitation and other social skills ...
Which were really sooo valuable information.
I had to work an extra 20 mins with a 13 y/o boy cuz his therapist started late. His medical diagnosis is controversial, he started physiotherapy 4 years back with very very slow -if any- improvements. He can walk alone for few steps, yet very unbalanced and needs mild to moderate assistance in selfcare.
I have worked with him few times before. So I approached: salams Umar and did shake hands. I kept his hand in mine shaking it for 20 secs trying to elecit any feelings of umm .. confusion or even discomfort from his side. Nothing happened.
So I said: and when will you give me my hand back?
He then looked at his hand and then he looked back at me and said nothing. Then I added if you want me to let go of your hand just say seebi! So He did.
I asked him to stand up and walk to therapy room, he made like nine attempts to raise himself off the chair alone, I watched, he didnt ask for help untill I gave him my hand. Same happened when I asked him to take his shoes off, and sit on the mat. And no matter how difficult the task that he had to do he never complained, never protested as I pushed him several times. He either said nothing at all, even with no gestures, or laughs with no explained reasons.
At the end of the session, I had him to repeat after me: You know what you have learnt today, to do so and so. Again I did the same trick of shaking hands, but this time he managed to say: Seebi!
Well this child has no hearing or speech problems, his motor abilities are not bad, his intelligence is avarage. But his main issue is behavioural.
I mean if during the session, we can make the child tranfer from point A to point B get a ball from the basket at B and come back to A. And the family at home are practicing the same with him. THEN he has his motor skills exercised pretty well but still he didnot learn that (I) can trasfer from A to B to get something that (I) want to use. (I) can ask for help if (I) needed, or choose not to do something because (I) dont want to. And by observing people around me doing something (I) can teach myslef to do the same thing to myself become more happy, comfortable or independent.
So without this being properly adressed nothing will be improved in his QoL and we are adding to the community a new piece of marionette (see below).
