How to Find a Great Surgeon

Post by harshan on Thu Nov 05, 2009 9:00 am

If you want to find a great surgeon, start with your family
physician, they may be able to help you find a great surgeon. Be sure
to ask, "Why are you referring me to this surgeon?” If the answer is
“he accepts your insurance” you can keep looking, but if the answer is
“when my husband needed a surgeon, this is who we chose,” you have a
high quality referral.
If you aren’t sure about what type of surgeon you need, ask your physician what type of specailist
they recommend. Some surgeries, such as an appendectomy, can be
performed by a general surgeon, while others require a specialist.
Ask Friends, Neighbors & Family About Their Surgeon

To Find a Great Surgeon, Find a Support Group

If you are having surgery for a common condition, there may be a
support group in your area or online. This is a great resource for
referrals. More than likely you will get a variety of opinions. Don’t
ignore the people who were not happy with their surgeon or their
outcome. If the patient has a legitimate complaint about their care,
take this into account when compiling your list of surgeons.
Using Your Insurance Company to Find a Surgeon

Check The Surgeon’s Credentials Before Making a Decision

Each state has a medical board that licenses physicians and
participates in disciplinary action for surgeons who have issues with
their practice. Take the time to look up recommended surgeons on the
website for the state medical board. Do they have a license to practice
in the state where you plan to have surgery? If they do not, you can
cross the name off of your list of possible surgeons.
Arrange for a Consultation With a Surgeon

Schedule Surgery or a Consultation With Another Surgeon

You may be expected to schedule a surgery at the end of the
consultation. If you are not confident that you have found your ideal
surgeon, do not schedule the surgery. Either way, ask for a day to
consider everything the doctor has said before making the surgery
official.
